On December 25, 2017, my family of five arrived in Kyoto, for my 6-month sabbatical. From January to June 2018, I was Visiting Professor at the Kyoto University of Art & Design. Professor Hirofumi Shimizu, head of Printmaking, was my host. Overlapping, I was also Visiting Professor at Kyoto Seika University, from March to June, hosted by Professor Atsuhiko Musashi. At both institutions, I maintained a regular studio presence, investigating new methods in photo-digital silkscreen carborundum plate-making and printing. (A mouthful, to be sure.) I gave presentations on my own creative work, as well as a profile of the Printmaking area at the University of Regina at the start of my engagements at the respective institutions. Nearing the end of June, I also did technical demonstrations for multiple classes, all in Japanese!
During non-studio time, my family and I explored Kyoto thoroughly, and travelled to several other cities and regions in Japan. We lived, breathed, and ate everything Japanese, and it was a life-changing experience for us all.
