About Souaad and her family

Nadem Rajab and his son were killed when their home was bombed in Syria. His wife, Souaad Mahli, and seven of their children survived and they are now refugees living a very difficult life in Lebanon.  We are raising money to sponsor Souaad and her family to give them a new life in Canada.

This family has suffered immeasurable loss. Bombs and gunfire have taken brothers, sisters, children and parents. While Souaad and her family have escaped the ravages of war in Syria, their situation in Lebanon is far from perfect. Syrian refugees are treated badly in Lebanon, and life is very hard. Many Syrian refugee camps in Lebanon are being burned.

How did this fundraising venture start?

In 2018, our family asked the Regina Open Door Society (Regina, Saskatchewan) if we could help  with a newly-arrived refugee family.  We were matched with Mohamad Rajab, his wife Amal, and their five children. Since becoming friends with the Rajab family, we have seen the incredible impact that a life in Canada can have on people who have only ever known war. Souaad is Mohamad's widowed sister-in-law.

How will the money be used?

The money would go towards helping Souaad and her seven children with the first year of living in Canada. It would cover things like rent and utilities, clothing, food, basic transportation for this family of 8. In order to sponsor refugees in Canada, the government of Canada requires the sponsors raise the appropriate amount per individual child and adult.

When are they coming to Canada?

In Spring 2022, after submitting a detailed and complicated set of applications, with the help of Donna Nelson at the Knox Metropolitan Church, we received confirmation that Souaad and her family have been APPROVED to come to Canada. In reality, their travel is still not finalized, as their application is now in the queue at the Canadian Embassy in Beirut, Lebanon. It may be months, or longer before they actually board a plane.

In the meantime, we would be incredibly grateful for any donation you could make. The sooner we raise this money, the sooner we will be ready to change the lives of this deserving family.

How can you donate?

Donations over $15 are eligible for a tax receipt, issued by the Knox Metropolitan Church, in Regina.
